Keep a close eye on those insects in your greenhouse

In order to more closely control conditions, and to keep pest infestations down, many growers will opt to try growing in a greenhouse. Greenhouses have a lot to offer plants in terms of protection from severe weather, wild animals, and harmful pests.

Plants in a greenhouse

While greenhouses are extremely beneficial, insects can’t be totally avoided. Pests can sneak into your greenhouse on the bottom of leaves, in the soil, and even on a shirt or tool being brought in from outside. This is why pest management in greenhouses is vital to keeping your greenhouse plants healthy, especially if you’re sharing seedlings or starting cuttings for your landscape.

Whitefly

Some of the common insects found in even the most well-fortified greenhouses are aphids, mealybugs, mites, whiteflies, thrips, and fungus gnats – though not in the numbers you’d expect outside. That being said, a tool like Fly Web Sticky Cards are an important part of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

program for those growing in a greenhouse. These small cards are useful tools that can alert you to the

presence of pests as well as an estimate as to how widespread the infestation is.

FlyWeb Sticky Cards can often help you detect early pest infestations more effectively than will intensive plant sampling. By using FlyWeb Sticky Cards, insect population trends can be tracked, and more informed and timely pest management decisions can be made. Placed higher n the grow area, sticky cards will trap the adult stages of flying insects such as western flower thrips, whiteflies, fungus gnats, shore flies, leafminers and winged aphids. Placing FlyWeb Sticky Cards closer to the roots of the plants will help catch spider mites, broad mites, mealybugs, scales, and wingless aphids that do not fly well, but still pose a danger to your plants.

One of the benefits of the FlyWeb Sticky cards is the dual colors they come in - catch rates of the different species of insects is maximized by using two insect attracting colors on each trap; Brilliant Blue and Yellow. This is because different insects are attracted to different colors; the yellow sticky traps attract a broad spectrum of flying insects, including: aphids, whiteflies, leafhoppers, and moths. The blue sticky traps are focused more on insects that don’t fly well, or are mainly soil-borne like thrips and leaf miners.

FlyWeb Sticky Cards offer protection and easy tracking for soil-borne insects, and protection of young plants from infestations. Perforations allow for placement at the base of the plant and can be hung without having excess weight on developing branches. While the FlyWeb Sticky Cards aren’t going to eradicate your pest problems, they will give you a clear idea of what you need to focus on for pest management and control moving forward – giving you the real advantage of knowing exactly what you’re dealing with!
