Make your house smell like spring

Make your house smell like spring

Ask any gardener what they look forward to the most when planting season comes around and you’ll hear a lot about the clear skies, fresh dirt, and…the smell in the air. And while it’s tempting to joke about fertilizer, this smell is the byproduct of the photosynthesis that’s happening as all the new growth appears and releases fresh oxygen into the air.

New Growth

Fresh air, new plants, and springtime flowers are all the smells that growers are identifying the growing season with, and though it’s still winter, you can bring these smells into an unexpected place – your home! This is the perfect time to start an indoor container garden, and here are the 5 flowers to plant right now that will bring the smell of spring indoors:

Tea Rose Begonia

'Tea Rose' Begonia: This pretty pink-flowered indoor plant does well in filtered light, loves humidity, and smells amazing! Once it starts blooming, it seems like new flowers pop up every day.

Paperwhite

Paperwhite: Described as ‘musky’ smelling, these gorgeous flowers can be forced to bloom at any time of the year, and will grow anywhere you put them…even without soil! No green thumb? No problem! They'll grow on a bed of pebbles with a little water.

Jasmine

Jasmine: The jasmine flower releases its fragrance at night after the sun has set and especially when the moon is waxing towards fullness, and jasmine flower buds are more fragrant than the flowers. That being said, jasmine smells like summer no matter what the moon is doing, and you’ll enjoy having that scent in your house.

Nutmeg Scented Geranium

Nutmeg-Scented Geranium: For those looking for a beautiful flower, that’s a bit less “floral”, this is one of the smallest scented geraniums, and will eventually settle into a mounded shape with trailing flower stems. The tiny, rounded leaves are grey-green and intensely fragrant, reminiscent of true nutmeg

Lemon Tree

Dwarf Meyer Lemon Tree: Okay, not technically a flower, but the blossoms, leaves, and fruit give off an unmistakable citrus smell that will make your home smell clean and inviting!

While you can buy these plants in a nursery, more or less matured, but that could put a damper on that ‘fresh-from-the-soil’ smell that sproutlings have. Waiting for these plants to grow through the vegetative stage may try your patience, but Green Planet has just the nutrient you need for this: Abundant-Sea.

Abundant Sea

Abundant-Sea has been specifically designed to encourage this rapid growth during a plant’s vegetative stage with an impressive array of natural ingredients. The most useful in this mix is Giant Pacific Kelp -  one of the fastest growing organisms on earth! It’s also one of the many secrets behind Abundant-Sea. The more successful the vegetative stage, the more fruits and flowers your plant will be able to produce. It’s this extensive nutrient mix within Abundant-Sea that helps plants to reach their full vegetative growth capacity!

Abundant Sea

This is a game-changer – because after the vegetative state comes blooming, just where you wanted to be and ahead of schedule! Now THAT smells sweet!

Keep a close eye on those insects in your greenhouse

While greenhouses are extremely beneficial, insects can’t be totally avoided. Pests can sneak into your greenhouse on the bottom of leaves, in the soil, and even on a shirt or tool being brought in from outside. This is why pest management in greenhouses is vital to keeping your greenhouse plants healthy, especially if you’re sharing seedlings or starting cuttings for your landscape.
