Odor Control in Horticulture | SKRUBB Odor Eliminator

Odor Control and Compliance

Odor control can frequently be an afterthought in the planning phases of a large cultivation project. When a cultivation facility creates a large amount of odor, this can be considered a nuisance to surrounding populations. City and state governments are allowed to step in and take measures to fight the production of major odors, usually in the form of hefty fines, penalties, and environmental impact reviews. In Colorado, one Commercial Growing facility was hit with a $12,000 USD initial fee for violating their city’s odor control legislations, and then hit again with $10,000 USD follow-up only a week later for failing to take proper measures to prevent the odors being generated by their facility.

As compliance issues come to the forefront of the discussion around cultivation facilities in suburban and urban areas, it is important to place odor control into the discussion and planning process. One solution is creating buffered exit points for odor bearing air in facilities where air movement is forced and able to be directed outwards through single channels or ducts. Carbon scrubbers, originally developed to reduce the amount of interference being caused by paint facilities in Europe, utilize charged carbon with extremely high surface area to capture and adsorb odor molecules in microscopic spaces as air passes through the filter to exit the facility. While this method is certainly effective, it can require constant maintenance and filter replacement, generating waste and driving up overhead costs. Additionally, high humidity environments can hamper the performance of carbon filters due to water vapor being pulled out from passing humid air and binding to the carbon via adsorbtion, thus reducing the efficacy and lifetime of the filter.

A New Solution for Horticultural Odor Control

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator from Left Coast Wholesale offers an alternative to traditional carbon based odor control systems that is easily scalable and deployable for any greenhouse, outdoor, or indoor growing facility. The patented formula was created for its ease of use, high concentration, and environmentally friendly nature as a solution for growers who are concerned about odor control. SKRUBB Odor Eliminator is ideal for growers who are also looking to reduce overall power consumption dedicated to odor control with forced air movement, as well as those who may be experiencing issues with traditional odor control due to humid environments.

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator - Horticultural Odor Control

What is SKRUBB?

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator is a non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and fully biodegradable formulation specially designed to eliminate odors from large, land based sources. SKRUBB deployable in water-based delivery systems, including water walls and atomizing misters. SKRUBB is even compatible with evaporative cooler units of all sizes, but requires air to be pulled through the cooling pads and exhausted out, rather than blowing cool air in.

How Does SKRUBB work?

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator utilizes all-natural enzymes to destroy the compounds that create odor. By disassembling these compounds on a molecular level, SKRUBB renders them inert and replaces them with a light, pleasant scent. In in house trials, SKRUBB was effective at neutralizing odors sourced from a Greenhouse containing cannabis and found to be effective at neutralizing and replacing otherwise intrusive odors with only one SKRUBB running unit per 1500 Sq Ft. of canopy.

What Are The Benefits of SKRUBB vs. Other Odor Control Systems?

Odor neutralization with SKRUBB Odor Eliminator compared to say, carbon filtration has several benefits, especially for large scale operations. While carbon filters are effective, they require direct ventilation, which can complicate setup and maintenance as well as raise overhead costs. Additionally, carbon filters subject to extreme duress require pellet or carbon replacement every 2-4 months, or full replacement entirely. Large Facilities may have upwards of 150 carbon filters to replace at a single location. This process can eat up a significant amount of time and money, with carbon filters ranging anywhere from 50-250$ per unit.

Benefits of Using SKRUBB for Odor Control

  • Reduces Waste - Non-toxic formula is fully biodegradable, can be safely drained out of reservoir into surrounding area without negative impact to the condition of the ground or surrounding plant life.
  • Easy Cleanup – Maintenance is a breeze. SKRUBB Odor Eliminator leaves little to no residue on evaporative cooling pads and systems running SKRUBB can be easily cleaned by running a hydrogen peroxide dilution as a wash through the system, or with an oxidizer wash followed by a citric acid wash through the unit running SKRUBB.
  • Simple Recharge – Just purge your reservoir and refill with SKRUBB every 2-3 Weeks. Can be done with one person and one reservoir across a series of linked systems to reduce time.

How Do I Use SKRUBB? Do I Need to Replace My Pre-Existing Equipment?

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator can be incorporated into any setup with little to no modifications. Simply incorporate SKRUBB into a water wall or evaporative cooler reservoir and position an exhaust fan to pull air through the membrane from inside your greenhouse. This can be done by placing a fan on the exterior facing of the water wall, or by positioning a water wall in front of your pre-existing exhaust fan.  SKRUBB is also compatible with injector systems for those wishing to incorporate it into an automated delivery system utilizing misters or atomizers. When utilizing reservoirs, drip lines, or injectors for delivery, lightly aerate the reservoir, and treat with hydrogen peroxide dilutions regularly to prevent any possibility of buildup as you would in waterborne reservoir setups.

What is the Usage Rate?

SKRUBB Odor Eliminator can be utilized at a 1 part SKRUBB : 25 parts Water ratio in an evaporative cooling system for moderate to severe odors. For more severe odor control issues, Dilution can be raised to 1:15. SKRUBB can run for approximately 3 weeks until reservoir replacement is needed.
